WHO WE ARE - AND WHY!

The British Friends of The Sengwer Tribe of Kenya (Sengwer Aid) is a British charity which supports the indigenous Sengwer tribe in the west of Kenya.

The Sengwer are a tribe who were removed from their lands by British Settlers in the late 19th and early 20th century. At that time they resettled in the Cherangani Hills near the border with Uganda. This is a very remote, rural area with few means of income generation at present. Agriculture is at the subsistence level and often runs short of meeting the people's needs. Our aim is to help the Sengwer community help themselves.

Sengwer Aid was set up following an extended period in 2002 during which Gill Pirt (the present Sengwer Aid Organiser) lived with the tribe and discovered their needs as well as the many strengths that they can bring to any project. She has maintained this personal link, through self funded visits, once or twice a year since that time, as well as frequent contact via mobile phone texts and by e-mails. Other Charity Trustees have also made many visits and seen for themselves the difference our help makes.  This ensures that all funds raised from donations are spent wisely and go directly to the community for the people to manage themselves. Sengwer Aid takes no expenses from people's donations.
