Helping the Sengwer Tribe of Kenya work their
way out of poverty
What we do: the work of Sengwer Aid
All Sengwer Aid Trustees are unpaid volunteers; no expenses at all are taken from donations. Trustees work in many ways to help the Sengwer Tribe of Kenya help themselves:
~ undertake many talks throughout the year, encouraging people to help us raise the money we need to help the Sengwer.
~ consider bids from groups within the Sengwer community who have realistic plans of ways to generate income or food, or make improvements for the benefit of the people in the area.
~ sell many of the goods produced by the Sengwer community. These include bead jewellery, wooden spoons, kalabash and paintings
~ support the Eco-tourism Project in the Cherangani Hills at Kapolet. Guests pay a modest amount to use the excellent facilities available - a holiday with a difference!
One of the most important aspects is to raise awareness of the difficulties and needs of the Sengwer tribe wherever we go, whether in the UK or in Kenya. This is much appreciated by the tribe and has given them the courage and determination to stand their ground and improve the lives of their families.
What we don't do is just hand out money. We listen carefully and work in partnership with the community to understand their difficulties, to enable them to help themselves and to ensure that precious funds are used wisely. True empowerment!
