THE ECO-TOURISM PROJECT
Helping the Sengwer Tribe of Kenya work their way out of poverty
Eco-Tourism Project
As part of our work with the Sengwer community Sengwer Aid supports the Eco-Tourism Project. This brings much-needed income into the area, benefiting the whole community.
The location is unique; a beautiful, remote, rural setting with the most gentle and welcoming of hosts. The settlement is perched on the top of the hillside looking right over to Uganda. On a clear morning you can see right across to Mount Elgon.
Visitors stay in traditional grass-thatch mud huts, each accommodating 2 people in comfortable twin beds. There are African-style shower blocks and clean, hygienic pit latrines. All meals are provided, cooked traditional-style using fresh local produce. Fruit is plentiful and delicious with local honey fresh from traditional hives.
You can take guided walks through the interesting mountain rainforest (and see the work of the Water Project, harnessing water to pipe down into the village), watch the amazing birdlife and butterflies, wander down to village teahouses, cool down with a paddle at the waterfalls - or just enjoy the tranquillity and relax! The stars at night are amazing; there is no light pollution here!
Sengwer Aid can put you in touch with reliable and trustworthy Sengwer contacts so you can plan your visit. Get in touch to ask for our ECO TOURISM PACK for info on costs, Sengwer vocabulary, maps, climate, food, travel, hygiene, wildlife, sleeping arrangements, dress code, travel, religion,
activities etc.
